Micropress (Cluster printing)
This is a very powerful solution for the "Print on demand" environment developed by Minolta and T.R.Systems to enable up to twelve black/white or colour photocopier/printers to produce a maximum output of 900 black/white or 240 full colour pages per minute.
Normally the twelve print engines would be a mixture of black/white and colour units and the system operator can decide whether to have all the available units printing the same job, or split various jobs between either individual or groups of print engines.
Great flexibility is therefore available with the added advantage of being able to keep printing (in the event of a problem) by simply transferring the remainder of a job from a unit needing attention to another, which is still running.
All the printing is computer controlled, so the operator will know to the page how far any job has progressed at any stage.
Historically the large "Docutec" type photocopiers have been used in these locations but if this goes down the whole job stops, whereas with a cluster system the other copiers simply take over and finish the job.
Multiple documents can be merged from a variety of different applications and amazingly, mail-merged documents are printed at the full rated speed of the print engines!
The Windows based operating system is very easy to use and allows the operator to control every aspect of document proofing or input, processing and output at the click of a mouse.
Obviously this hugely powerful and versatile system is aimed at large control print locations but it does offer a very cost effective and flexible alternative to the massive 120 page per minute Leviathans historically used in these situations.
